“No one can be you as well as you can be you.” That’s what Carla Harris, vice chairman of global wealth management at Morgan Stanley, said at the ColorComm Conference last month as she spoke about strategies to success.
I was honored to have been selected as one of the fellows for ColorComm’s first-ever C2 Fellowship Program—a professional development program catered to young, minority women in the communications field ranging between ages 21-26. To say I am grateful is an understatement. As one of the fellows, we were tasked to deliver big ideas on where ColorComm would be in its 10th year in 2021, and then presenting them in front of Whoopi Goldberg and a congregation of more than 400 people! (P.S. You can watch the recorded Facebook Live of my team’s presentation here).
The Daikaya folks bring pop-top sake, fried chicken dinners, and seven kinds of ramen to the District with Bantam King. Had a mini adventure with my little brother today. Check it out!
"How do I make my Instagram look pretty?"
"Why are their photos + graphics always on point?"
I get this question all the time and you really have to have an eye for design. You also need to visualize everything as a whole. There's a method to this branding madness. This doesn't mean you have to be a graphic designer, but you need to know the quirks to making things look good. I mean really, people truly post their good pics on the 'gram and nothing less. Think about it that way, just on a more visual, strategic and themed-way. It's more than just fine tuning your pics to adjust the brightening and clarity. You are painting the picture for your brand. I'll break it down below. Hope you follow through and let me know what you think!
Pitching ain't easy... more on that in another post. But really, the work doesn't get done by itself. I am starting out this post in this way because lately I've been getting queries to "do PR" for them, and I have some concerns about this.
Honestly, I simply decline. Why? Because you do not have a story to show and tell, at least not yet. I'm not saying I can't do the job and that you shouldn’t try. I’m saying that I recommend other steps first (like building your digital presence and doing this). When there's a foundation that needs to be built, then that's when YOU as an entrepreneur, small business owner or whomever you are, need to take action and build your credibility. You can’t just skip a whole step and expect to get media coverage.
It's a new year ya'll and you know what that means. Everyone sets new goals and resolutions. But are you really taking the necessary steps to get them done? One thing I like to say is that you have to make plans to plan...and that's about as strategic as it can get. I get a lot of questions from clients on how to become more consistent in their content creation planning. Many of you are launching new blogs, a new Instagram, Twitter and have to put content out in order to bring traffic to your platforms.
